Castle of Abandoned Sumacàrcer: Medieval Fortress over Valencia's Riverbed

Castell de Penya-roja or Castell de Sumacàrcer, located in the municipality of Sumacàrcer in La Ribera Alta, Valencia, Spain, sits atop a large promontory. It features two separate complexes to the northwest and southeast, of which only some remains of walls and bases of some towers remain today. This castle, with origins before the 11th century, is a medieval fortress. Despite being abandoned by the population in the 13th century, it was allowed to be rebuilt in the 14th century. Today, it stands as a Bé d'Interés Cultural, registered in the cultural patrimony of Valencia and Spain.
