Excommunicated Claryssans of Belorado faced eviction due to rejection of

A historical tale of the eviction of the excommunicated Claryssans of Belorado, Spain, in 2026, due to their rejection of the Catholic Church.

The monastery of St. Clare's in Belorado, Spain, was founded in 1358 and destroyed in 1458. However, it was rebuilt in 1460 by the Count of Haro, who obtained a papal bull to establish a convent following the Rule of St. Clare. During the War of Independence, the community was forced to abandon the monastery, which was plundered and destroyed by French troops. After the Desamortizacion de Mendizábal in 1835, the nuns lost all their properties. With the help of local noblewoman Doña Bonifacia del Campo, they managed to reacquire their properties.

In 2024, the nuns abandoned the Catholic Church and embraced sedevacantism, a movement that denies the validity of the current pope. Their leader, Sor Isabel de la Trinidad (Laura García de Viedma), was excommunicated by the Catholic Church in Burgos. Ten other nuns were excommunicated after they failed to appear before the Tribunal eclesiástico. The nuns declared that any canonical penalties or sanctions were null once they were outside the Catholic Church. In 2026, Sor Isabel was evicted from the monastery of Belorado due to these actions.

The community continued to face judicial fronts after 2026.
