The Battle of Atapuerca took place on September 1, 1054, between two brothers, King García Sánchez III of Navarre and King Ferdinand I of Castile at the site of Piedrahita in the valley of Atapuerca. The Castilian army emerged victorious, leading to the death of the Navarrese king and his favorite, Fortún Sánchez. This battle had significant political consequences, consolidating the power of the Kingdom of León and Castile and marking a turning point in the Reconquista, the centuries-long struggle to reclaim Iberia from Muslim rule.
