Fort Orange: A Dutch trading lodge and fort in Ghana

In Sekondi, a Dutch trading lodge built in 1642 was expanded into a full fort to support European trade and provide protection.

In Sekondi, there stands Fort Orange. This structure did not begin its life as a formidable citadel. The Dutch West India Company built it as a trading lodge in 1642 to facilitate trade along the Gold Coast.

Over time, Fort Orange grew in size and importance, becoming a full-fledged fort in 1690. It was subsequently reinforced and remodeled into a fortification by 1704 following an attack by the Ahantas in 1694.

Today, the site serves as a naval base for the Ghana Ports and Harbor Authority. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site listing for the Forts and Castles of Ghana.
