Once the official capital of Tennessee, Tanasi was a thriving settlement for the Cherokee people from 1600 to 1740. This was a bustling hub located near the Little Tennessee River, ruled by the Tanasi Warrior, but with the crowning of Moytoy in Tellico in 1730, the power shifted to Great Tellico. By the early 1750s, Chota had eclipsed Tanasi, and by 1745, the submerged towns were nothing but memories. The creation of Tellico Reservoir in 1979 led to archaeological surveys that recovered thousands of artifacts. In the 1980s, the Tennessee Valley Authority put up a monument on the shoreline beside the submerged site of Tanasi, where today visitors can see a testament to its history and legacy as one of the historic Overhill towns. Located 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Vonore, just off Highway 455 (Citico Road), the Tanasi Monument is now managed by the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation.
