Landing in North Carolina's Too-Cowee, you'll encounter an ancient whiff, a stench that's known battles between the Cherokee and British, the US joining in the Anglo-Cherokee War, and lingered long past forced Cherokee removal. Though ownership changed hands, this hill shared in the turmoil, hosting strife that spanned centuries. However, in 2006, it was returned to its original inhabitants, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Since 1973, Too-Cowee has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, shared by Cherokee and state. It stands, untouched and mysterious, as one of the best preserved South Appalachian Mississippian culture sites in western North Carolina.
