Grandes Molinos Vizcaya: A colossal, abandoned flour mill

Grandes Molinos Vizcaya is a colossal, abandoned flour mill located in Zorroza, near Bilbao, Spain. It was declared a Cultural Qualified asset by the Basque government in 2009. Despite its guarded status, it is currently in a state of abandonment. The building, shaped like an L, with its five floors and two towers, was built between 1923-1924 by Federico de Ugalde y Echevarría. It is one of the most significant industrial heritage elements of Vizcaya.

Although the building houses 23 silos, with the large ones promise a capacity of 75 tons of grain, they are currently in a state of abandonment. The exterior walls, made of reinforced concrete panels, hark back to a bygone era. The double-pitched roof, originally tiled, now sports uralite tiles on a wooden deck. Wooden beams are still evident at the overhangs. Six cargo tunnels lead to the central courtyard, where broad-gauge and narrow-gauge trains once entered.
