Explore the Charm of Jauregia, Bilbao's Baroque Palace

Jauregia, colloquially known as La Bolsa, offers a captivating blend of Bilbao's history and contemporary culture, showcasing the grandeur of Baroque architecture within the heart of the Basque Country.

Situated within Bilbao's historic Casco Viejo, Jauregia, or La Bolsa, is a 18th-century Baroque palace that harkens back to the city's commercial past. Constructed around 1727, it stands as a symbol of Bilbao's former maritime and trading power. The palace's strategic position at the crossroads of Santa María, Pelota, Torre, and Barrencalle Barrena streets places it at the epicenter of Bilbao's trade activity. Jauregia is a remarkable example of Baroque civil architecture in the Basque Country, boasting three ornate façades complete with distinct Baroque portals, shields, and a trapezoidal footprint tailored to the medieval street grid.

The Pelota Street façade, in particular, is adorned with intricate mixed-line moldings and heraldic decorations, unique in Bizkaian architecture. The palace was initially designed as a noble residence but soon became associated with Bilbao's commercial elite, earning its popular name ‘La Bolsa’ due to a merchants' exchange or hardware store operated by the Austrian-origin Yohn family in the late 18th century. In the early 20th century, it is believed that a secret tunnel under the palace was used for clandestine wine trading.

The palacewas severely damaged during the 1983 floods but was later purchased and restored by the Bilbao City Council in 1987. Thoughtfully rehabilitated to preserve its historical elements while making it suitable for public use as a cultural center, Jauregia now serves as a municipal hub, hosting exhibitions, workshops, and community events.
