The Christ at the Summit: A Blessing and a Vow

Find the tallest statue in Italy and meet an Italian artist who left a towering legacy. Explore the tale of Le Christ des sommets in the Aosta Valley.

Perched on a mountaintop in the Aosta Valley of Italy is a statue named Le Christ des sommets, a French translation of The Christ of the Peaks. It stands atop the Balmenhorn summit - at 4,167 meters, one of the highest peaks in the Monte Rosa massif. Created by the Italian sculptor Alfredo Bai, the statue represents Jesus Christ benedicting. Bai, the commander of a partisan group during World War II, made an unofficial vow to build the statue if he returned home safely. In 1955, after finding the necessary funds, he honored his vow, dedicating the statue to Christ in memory of fallen soldiers. A smaller replica was built four years later on the Cervino peak as a tribute. Today, Le Christ des sommets remains a popular destination for mountain climbers and a pilgrimage site for visitors seeking solace.
