In 1899, Margherita of Savoy, not one to shy from personal aesthetics, decided to construct a castle of her own, christened Savoy Castle, in the heart of Gressoney-Saint-Jean, Italy, captivated by the beauty of the Lys Valley. The design was entrusted to Italian architect Emilio Stramucci, and the castle, completed in 1904, boasted three floors with distinct functions: the first floor for living quarters, the second for royal quarters, and the third for lodgings for Margherita’s court. Today, the Aosta Valley region claims ownership, also harboring the Savoy Castle Alpine Botanical Garden. As a beacon of early 20th-century architecture and design, the castle stands as a testament to Margherita's unique taste.
