The bronze pope in Seville's square

For ten years, a bronze statue of Pope John Paul II has stood in Sevilla's Plaza de la Virgen de los Reyes, a reminder of his two visits to the city. The statue was designed and placed there in 2006, following his second visit in 1982, as a token of the city's gratitude to the pope. Its pedestal bears a plaque. The statue was inaugurated in 2012 in the presence of the Mayor and the Bishop. While the statue was proposed to be placed at the Centro Cajasol, Plaza de la Contratación, Puerta de Jerez and Calle Adolfo Rodríguez Jurado, it was ultimately placed near the Seville Cathedral and opposite the Archbishop’s Palace.
