The Bleeding Hill: Balceriškės Hillfort, Lithuania

Balceriškės Hillfort is a protected archaeological site located in Balceriškėse, Žiežmarių apylinkės seniūnijoje, in the municipality of Kaišiadorių rajono savivaldybės teritorijoje. The hill became a site of interest in the 20th century, and excavations were started. The Lithuanian Institute of History unearthed the hillfort in 1971. It was built during the Iron Age, and dates back to that time. The distinctive feature of this hillfort is the deep gash or scar on its right side, about 100 meters from the road.

The hillfort is said to have been fortified with a wall, with an 8-meter broad and 0.3-meter high platform. The hill altar, or folk shrine, known to locals as the 'bleeding hill' is a testament to the hillfort's antiquity, and to the religious practices that took place here in the past. The hillfort is oval in shape, and has a platform around 8 meters wide and 0.3 meters high, leaning towards the west. The hillfort's slopes are approximately 4.5-8 meters high.

Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this mysterious and mystical site, and try to unravel the mysteries of its past.
