The Disappearing 13th-Century Church in Castronuño

The Catholic temple of Santa María del Castillo, situated in Castronuño, dates back to the 13th century and is in the Romano-Gothic style. Historically, Castronuño was under the order of the Hospitaliers of San Juan. The old Church of Santa María del Castillo, which now houses the current schools in the village, collapsed in 1919, as reported by historian Francisco Antón. San Juan Bautista Church completely replaced the old church, carrying with it centuries of history beneath it. According to Francisco Antón, the church displays hispano-languedocian architecture, similar to the churches found in Villalcázar de Sirga and Villamuriel de Cerrato.
