1851-built Italianate Principal Theatre in Valls still thriving after 171 years

Principal Theatre, located at Carrer Jaume Huguet 10 in Valls, Spain, was built between 1845 and 1851, showcasing the 19th-century Italian architectural style. The theatre, initially managed by public deed to architect Ignasi Jordà and decorated by Josep Planella, was completed on December 8th, 1850, but inaugurated on a later date. Sculptor Anselm Nogués adorned the medallions with Moratín and Calderon’s portraits.

The building, recognized as a local cultural asset (IPAC code: 2401), has a seating capacity for 302 people, with 106 seats in the platea and the remaining 196 in the loft. The façade is divided into three sections, with a central one featuring three semi-circular arches, and each side having an angled and a modified arch. A first-floor balcony crosses the entire building, and the lateral sections are divided by a Gothic Catalan-style column.

A three-part window is situated at the center of the second floor, with balconies on either side. The building is crowned by a cornice that runs its entire length. The original interior design was Italian, and after years of closure and extensive rehabilitation, the Theatre Principal was reopened on 30th January 1998.
