A Hundred Farms at Stensholm Manor: The Tales of Abrahamstorp and Arvidstorp

Stensholm, a manor in Sweden, was once home to over a hundred torps, or small farms. Abrahamstorp, built in the second half of the 17th century, is one such torp named after its first farmer. Arvidstorp, another torp, was one of the oldest and largest dairy farms mentioned in the church records from 1682. The name Arvidstorp comes from Arfwid, the name of the first farmer. The residents of Arvidstorp were all named Arfwid or Arfwidsson in the 1700s. Torpet Bjursbäcken, believed to have been inhabited since the 8th century AD, is another torp. There are documented grave mounds near the torpet Bjursbäcken, and it is mentioned in church records from the 1600s. The majority of inhabitants were tenants. In 1910, the torpet Bjursbäcken stopped functioning as a day labor farm.
