Nestled in the hills of Piliakiemiai, Lithuania, lies an ancient relic - Piliakiemiu piliakalnis, or the Piliakiemi hillfort. Its stone walls stand nearly 3 meters high and are nearly 30 meters long, overlooking the Kiementas river. Built in the prehistoric times, the fort was constructed using stones and mud, with a ditch dug around it, a 1-meter-high and 28-meter-long wall built on top, and a 2-meter-deep and 22x15-meter-wide terrace built on the west side.
A pit at the center of the hillfort, potentially a well, has also been identified. Fragments of pottery and stones have been found on the site during excavations. The hillfort was first discovered in 1969 by the Scientific Research Council and is now protected as a national monument. It is managed by the National History Museum. Today, visitors can explore the hillfort and learn about the ancient people who once called this place home.
