The Eccentric Oval: A Medieval Hillfort in the Heart of Baluošas Village

This medieval hillfort resides within the territory of Švenčionių Regional Municipality, a short distance from Baluošas Village and Baluošų Lake. With an unusual oval shape, it spans approximately 65x43 meters, with walls rising to 2 meters high. Its imposing structure boasts four walls, each with a 2.5 meter wide, 0.5 meter deep ditch at the base, 2 meter thick walls at the north and south ends, and a staircase every 2 meters, rising 150 meters in total from a 2 meter deep staircase. A thicket of trees may have covered the hillfort. Notably, archaeological findings dating back to the 9th to 12th centuries were discovered 1 kilometer away to the northwest, known as the Dubingiai archaeological site. The hillfort was studied by the Institute of History in 1970, and since May 19, 1998, it has been protected by a decision of the Lithuanian government.
