Runestone U380

Runestone U380

The stone stands at  Mariakyrkan.  The fragment stands on the grass field opposite the church entrance

“Åsbjörn and Kuss/Guss let…”

The name Åsbjörn was common throughout the Nordic countries during the Viking Age. The name Kuss/Guss was likely originally a byname meaning 'the bent' or 'the talkative'.

Did you know that
the custom of erecting rune-carved memorial stones originated in the 960s in Denmark and gradually spread to Norway and Sweden. Although runes had been used earlier, but only to a limited extent, as magical inscriptions on objects or on runestones like the famous Rök stone in Östergötland. For these runic inscriptions, the older runic alphabet with 24 characters was used, which was later replaced by the younger runic alphabet with 16 characters.
