Redoubt of the Bayonnette

The Redoubt of the Bayonnette, located in Lapurdi, one of the provinces of Basque Country, was built in 1795 to defend the Bay of Biscay. It weathered an attack from the British Armada during the Peninsular War in 1813, when it was taken control of by Mariscal Soult and French troops. Finally recognized in 1992, it stands as a monument to the strategic battles fought in the Basque Country. Carrying the scars of centuries past, the Redoubt's cannons and ditches remain, allowing one to imagine the clashes and skirmishes that once took place in its shadow.
