The Cryptic Gate of Alchemy: A Golden Mystery in Rome's Piazza Vittorio

Step into the labyrinth of Rome's Piazza Vittorio, where the riddle of the Alchemy Gate remains unsolved.

Constructed between 1678 and 1680, the Alchemical Door, also known as the Alchemy Gate or the Magic Portal, was a peculiar addition to Massimiliano Palombara's villa near Piazza Vittorio, Rome. Out of the villa's original five gates, this is the only one that bore alchemical symbols, and it remains the only gate standing. According to an account recorded in 1802, a traveler, known as 'Stibeum', embarked upon a nocturnal quest to find a secret herb said to create gold in the villa's gardens. The following morning, Stibeum was allegedly seen vanishing through the gate, leaving behind traces of gold that were symbolically etched onto the villa's five gates and the mansion's walls. These engravings are chiefly in Latin and Hebrew, one of which reads: 'Passing through the gate of this villa, the alchemist pilgrim obtains a great quantity of gold 1680'.
