Chatting with Pope John Paul II in the Madding Crowd of Rome

A gigantic bronze statue of the adored pope greets you where you'd hardly anticipate: smack in the middle of Rome

The Monument to Pope John Paul II, a grand statue cast in bronze, towers in an unexpected location - Piazza dei Cinquecento. Right across from it stands the Termini Train station, where the statue, designed by Oliviero Rainaldi, boasts the name ‘Conversations: A Tribute to John Paul II’. The monument was bestowed upon the city by the Fondazione Silvana Paolini Angelucci Onlus and presented to the public on the 18th of May, 2011. It elicited controversy due to its open chasuble, often compared to a tent or bell.
