Excavations of KV31 in the Valley of the Kings

The University of Basel Kings' Valley Project excavated the tomb of KV31, uncovering the remains of five mummified elite individuals from the mid-Eighteenth Dynasty.

KV31 is an ancient Egyptian tomb located in the Valley of the Kings, near Luxor, Egypt. While the top of the shaft was known prior to 2010, the University of Basel Kings' Valley Project began a full excavation of the site that year. The tomb dates to the mid-Eighteenth Dynasty, likely during the reigns of Thutmose III and Amenhotep II. It may be one of two tombs excavated in 1817 by Giovanni Battista Belzoni on behalf of Second Earl Belmore, which could account for a stone sarcophagus donated by Belmore to the British Museum.
