The Monument to the National Rising stands on the Héroes de España Square in Melilla. It was built in 1941 as a tribute to the 'Glorious Spanish Army' and the city's defence forces. However, the statue it shows is not one of victory. The statue's most striking feature is the soldier on top, holding a rifle and the Spanish flag. According to local tradition, the uniform of the soldier on the monument bears no stain that resembles a calla lily flower.
