The Baluarte de San José Bajo is a fortress located in the southwestern corner of Melilla la Vieja in the Spanish city of Melilla. It is part of the city's historical and artistic complex, which is a property of cultural interest.
Built in 1694, the fortress was rebuilt in 1699 according to the design of Felipe Martín de Paredes after a levante storm destroyed it. It was later remodeled between 1711 and 1714, and finally expanded for artillery capacity in 1790 according to the design of Segismundo Font. The surface of the fortress was paved in 2006, and its southeast face was restored in 2018.
Beneath the fortress is the San José Bajo mine. In front of the structure was the Luneta de Santa Isabel, and it currently lacks a garita in the corner that looks toward the Plaza de las Culturas.
