Monumento a los Héroes y Mártires de las Campañas, Melilla

The Monumento a los Héroes y Mártires de las Campañas is a monument located in the center of Plaza de España, within the Ensanche Modernista of the Spanish city of Melilla. It forms part of the historic-artistic ensemble of the city of Melilla, and is a Cultural Asset.

The original plan to build the monument was in 1913, to honor General Marina, but he refused. The monument was constructed under the leadership of Cándido Lobera Girela in 1930. The artist, Juan López López, worked alongside Mariano Benlliure, and the architect was Manuel Díez Martínez. The monument was completed in 1931. Juan López López's work is a depiction of a soldier, partially covered by the Spanish tricolor flag, on top of a altar-like pillar, with the diosa Victoria on top, symbolizing victory. The monument is built with stone from Novelda. In 1971, a lighting fountain was added, updated after the victory of Spain over Holland in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
