The Enduring Tribute: The 8-meter-Tall Monument to St. Fernando in Seville

Fernando III of Castilla, also known as ‘The Saint’, was declared a saint by the Catholic Church in 1671, 437 years after his death. This monumental testament to his life can be found in the Plaza Nueva in the Arenal district of Seville’s Casco Antiguo. Initially designed by Francisco Javier Cavestany in 1848, the monument was dedicated solely to San Fernando, not to Queen Isabella II. Following Francisco Javier Cavestany’s design, Alfonso XII laid the first stone of the monument on March 27, 1877. Completed in 1924, the monument is surrounded by figures of historical figures who aided Fernando III in his conquests, such as Alfonso X de Castilla, Ramón de Bonifaz, Don Remondo, and Garci Pérez de Vargas.
