Francesc Maciá, affectionately known as 'L'Avi' or The Grandfather, was a military man who became the catalyst for Catalonia's independence movement. The monument in Barcelona's Plaça de Catalunya, erected in 1991, 14 years after his death, was created by the same artist responsible for sculpting the Passion Facade at the Sagrada Família, Josep Maria Subirachs.
