The Martyrs of the Independence (Monument to the Heroes of 1809)

The Monument to the Heroes of 1809, commonly known as the Martyrs of the Independence, faces the side wall of the Church of Sant Sever in the Gothic quarter of Barcelona. Constructed between 1929 and 1941, it commemorates the Catalans who dared to resist Napoleon's rule during the Conspiració de l'Ascensió in 1809. Its insurrection took place on May 14, aiming to unite the entire populace against the French occupation forces. Despite the uprising's failure, five leaders were executed on June 3, and three more were executed in subsequent days. Originally, the Monument was unveiled in 1929, without the statue, as it was still under production. The Monument is a fusion of elements from different periods, as it was rededicated in 1941 and restored in 2009, coinciding with the 200th anniversary of the events.
