The Motionful Tribute: Celebrating the Living Legacy of Catalan Literature

In 1994, Homenatge al Llibre, a monument crafted as a dynamic homage to Catalan toys, took form as a static piece in Barcelona, Spain. Born from the minds of graphic artist Josep Pla-Narbona and artist Joan Brossa, this annual fixture at the intersection of Passeig de Gràcia and Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes has evolved into an enigma, enticing visitors with its promise of a unique journey.

Commissioned by the Second-Hand Booksellers of Catalonia for the 43rd Fira del Llibre d'Ocasió Antic i Modern, Homenatge al Llibre was envisioned as a testament to Catalan heritage, taking the form of a beloved Catalan toy in motion. However, technical and financial hurdles led to its transformation into a static sculpture, inviting a different sort of exploration for every onlooker. Since its installation in 1997, Homenatge al Llibre has stood tall, becoming a symbolic manifestation of Catalan literature. Each year, a plaque is added to its base to honor a renowned Catalan writer, names such as Joan Brossa, Pere Gimferrer, and Avel·lí Artís i Gener etched into stone. The streets of Barcelona, Spain, continue to welcome this moving monument, inspiring curiosity and further exploration.
