Monastery carved from the Serrated Mountain

The monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat, located on the mountain of Montserrat in Monistrol de Montserrat, Catalonia, Spain, is a majestic abbey. Founded in 1025 and rebuilt in the 19th century, it remains in use with a community of around 70 monks. The Virgin of Montserrat, Catalonia's patron saint, is enshrined in the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu de Montserrat. Montserrat, meaning 'serrated mountain', has been a spiritual retreat for centuries, drawing visitors from far and wide. On a clear day, the island of Mallorca can be seen from the summit, Sant Jeroni, reachable by footpaths from the monastery. The basilica of Montserrat, with its single nave and central columns carved in wood, houses a neoclassical altar, a 15th-century cross by Lorenzo Ghiberti, and the shrine of octagonal form.
