In the heart of the French town, Stiring-Wendel, lies Puits Sainte-Marthe. Completed in 1852, this monument historique is one of the last standing masonry coal shafts in France. Serving various purposes over time, including water reservoir for the nearby factory, Puits Sainte-Marthe survived several periods of abandon. In 1975, plans were made to demolish the structure, but a group of passionate preservationists saved it. Today, it stands as a symbol of the community's heritage and a remnant of the town's coal mining past.
