Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery: The Battlefield Burials

The Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, east of Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Meuse, France, is the largest American military cemetery in Europe, covering 130.5 acres and containing the graves of 14,246 American military personnel, most of whom died during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. The cemetery includes eight sections arranged around a central reflection pool, a chapel decorated with American unit insignias, and the tablets of the missing which bear the names of soldiers without known graves.

The Meuse-Argonne American Memorial, a monument to the fallen, is also within the cemetery. George S. Patton, Fountain Stowers, Victor E. Chapman, and Edward L. Grant, a professional baseball player before the war, are among those buried in the cemetery (Patton having a separate headstone). The cemetery is maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission and open to the public daily, with the exception of January 1 and December 25.
