Levaniškiai hillfort: A relic of the Iron Age in Anykščiai

Levaniškiai hillfort, located in Anykščiai, is an archaeological site that dates back to the Iron Age. The hillfort, with an oval shape and headlands up to 7 meters high, is enclosed by a ditch running from east to west, covering an area of 60x30 meters. The fort was built using earth with three-angled headlands and a moat, suggesting a square or triangle-shaped enclosure. However, no historical or archaeological records support local legends of a ghost army marching in the area. The hillfort, with traces of ancient settlements in the surrounding 0.5 hectares, was first discovered in 1969 by the History Institute. Today, it is protected and registered as a cultural heritage object, with a plot of 8,600 square meters.
