Kaukai Hillfort: A Strategically Positioned Defensive Fortification in Lithuania

Kaukai Hillfort, nestled in the region of Alytaus rajono savivaldybės teritorijoje, is about 2 kilometres from the road Miroslavas – Meteliai and a stone's throw from Miroslavas – Meteliai and Papėčiai – Obelninkai. Measuring approximately 27x17 meters, with an oval shape and around 5-10 meters high, half of the hillfort is built into the hill. Studies indicate that the hillfort underwent three construction stages: the first was built using logs and stones, the second stage involved the addition of a fortifying wall, and the third, possibly dated to the early Middle Ages, was potentially used as a lookout post or a place of worship. The site yields a rich collection of ceramics, some of which bear unique shapes and trace their roots back to the 5th century BC, and iron age arrowheads have also been found here.
