The Enigmatic Ancestry of Kačėniškė Hillfort: A Wooden Maze

The Kačėniškė hillfort, an ancient monument in Lithuania, lies apart from the Mergežeris lake shore. This hillfort mound, 66x10 meters in size, was constructed with clay and wooden forms. Beneath the mound surface, a 1.5 meter wide, 0.2 meter thick wooden form and a 3 meter long, 0.3 meter thick clay layer were unearthed. Ten meters beneath the mound, another 10 meter long, 0.5 meter thick wooden form was discovered. On the northern slope, a 8 meter long, 0.3 meter high wooden staircase can be found. Similarly, on the western slope, a 9 meter long, 0.3 meter high wooden staircase is evident. The hillfort was deserted in the 1st millennium BC. A settlement inhabited the hillfort's edge, linked to the lake.
