Perched on a hill overlooking the village of Aulla, Fortezza della Brunella is an example of Renaissance military architecture. Its exact construction date is uncertain, but it is clear that the fortress, controlled all major routes in the region and those from Appennine passes, is the most powerful military structure in Lunigiana. Acquired by the Italian State in 1977, it is now owned by the Municipality of Aulla and houses the Museum of Natural History of Lunigiana. Today, visitors can explore the impressive fortress walls, towers, and courtyards, and learn about the environmental transformations of the Lunigiana region.
