Mariano Pérez Mínguez requested for a statue in honor of Cervantes in the Campillo del Rastro in 1876. The unveiling ceremony of the monument occurred on September 29, 1877.
The statue was created by Nicolás Fernández de la Oliva, professor of Sculpture at Valladolid's School of Fine Arts. Joaquín Ruiz Sierra, the municipal architect, directed the pedestal's carving and the statue's erection. Four reliefs were installed to decorate the pedestal, depicting scenes from Don Quijote.
Due to the works of urbanization around the Casa de Cervantes, the statue was moved to its current location, the Plaza de la Universidad, in 1899. The pedestal was also changed at this time. Meanwhile, the reliefs were moved to the interior courtyard of the Museum Casa de Cervantes.
