Esperan: A Community Resurrected in Spain's Abandoned Villages

Esperan is a historic village that was once owned by the Baronia d’Erill but was donated to the Monastary of Lavaix in 1173. For centuries, ownership has changed hands, and Esperan became known as ‘el mas perdut dels préstecs’, or ‘the lost property of the rentals’. Over time, the village faced difficult times and was eventually abandoned in the 19th century. Today, only the Church of St. Sadurní de Esperan remains, which is in a dilapidated state.

However, recent consolidation processes in 2018 and 2021 have seen efforts to revive Esperan. Americans have bought the abandoned village with plans to transform it into a vibrant community for new residents. This trend reflects broader demographic challenges across Spain’s rural interior, where abandoned territories mirror the empty landscapes of former populations. With the rise of remote work, villages like Esperan can become tourist havens or thriving communities for new residents.
