The deserted castle that once was the heart of the Erill barony

Erillcastell, located in the Alta Ribagorça region of northern Spain, was once the center of the Erill barony, a significant territory that encompassed the valleys of Boí, Viu, Manyanet y La Vall Fosca, as well as the eastern bank of the Noguera Ribagorçana between The Pont de Suert and Espills. In its heyday, the Erill family, a powerful family who served under the counts of Pallars and the kings of Aragón, lived in Erillcastell. The first known member of the Erill family was Ramon I d'Erill, mentioned in 1077. However, the castle in Erillcastell was donated to the Erill family in 1040 and dates back to 1024. It was initially a centre of power, protecting the Monastery of Lavaix from the 12th century. The Monastery of Lavaix became a Cistercian monastery in 1223. However, little remains of the castle now.
