Castle of Lagopesole

Castle of Lagopesole

A chapel inside a medieval castle in Southern Italy. Why?

Lagopesole Castle, built in the 14th century, is perched on a hill in Basilicata, Italy. It is one of the few remaining examples of Federician-era castles, and the only example from that period to have a chapel inside. Manfredi, son of Emperor Frederick II, visited it several times between 1259 and 1265. Under the reign of Charles I of Anjou, the castle experienced a period of prosperity and was used as a summer residence. However, the presence of a chapel inside the castle is a unique feature that distinguishes it from other Federician-era castles. Today, the castle is owned by the state and houses the Forestry Corps. It has also been the location for several film and television productions, including Pier Paolo Pasolini's The Gospel According to Matthew.
