Villaggio Saraceno, a rupestrian complex, lies hidden in Parco della Murgia Materana, around 6 kilometers south-southeast of Matera, though the exact distance from Montescaglioso remains unknown. It was once the property of the noble Saraceno family and offered refuge for farmers, shepherds, and livestock. Comprising 70 caves, many were previously used as sheepfolds in the late 20th century. Evidence of ancient shepherds' presence can still be detected.
Two caves, San Luca alla Selva and San Nicola al Saraceno, served as rupestrian churches. San Luca alla Selva, concealed behind bushes, houses a crucifix in bass relief, a baptismal font, and frescoes.
