The history of the Public Library of Lleida

Discover the history of the Public Library of Lleida, which was originally a 19th-century maternity house and orphanage before becoming a major library.

The Public Library of Lleida, also known as the Biblioteca Pública de Lleida, is a public library in the city of Lleida, Catalonia. Owned by the Generalitat de Catalunya, the building is located at Rambla d'Aragó 10. It originally served as a 19th-century maternity house and orphanage.

In 1998, the building underwent a heavy reform to operate as the town's main library. It now houses over 150,000 books and 9,760 printed documents from the 16th to the 19th century, along with 6 manuscripts and 25 incunables.

The library features two cloysters that are used for artistic and cultural exhibitions. These events often focus on local artists or social issues, including an exhibition in 1998 that focused on the building's past as an orphanage.
