A stone named for a Viking defender: Assur's stone in Bro, Uppsala

The stone named Brostenen or Assur's stone, with signum U 617, stands beside the road near Upplands-Bro and north of Bro church in Bro, Uppsala. Originally located in Uppland, it is nearly square, measuring 158 cm wide and 157 cm high. It has Christian cross ornamentation, a hint at its link to the Viking era. Inscribed with runes, it reads (in translation):

Ginnlög, daughter of Holmger, sister to Sygröd and Göt, she let make this bridge and raise this stone after Assur, her man, son to Håkon jarl. He was a land defender against the viking forces with Gether. May God help his soul and body. Ginnlög restored the stone after her husband Assur's death, making it a testament to her love and loyalty. The stone was once believed to have ties to some of the most prominent noble families in the Mälar Valley, including relations to the Sigurdsrunestene and Kjulastenen Sö 106. Multiple interpretations exist about who Håkon jarl might have been.
