Runestones are not gravestones as commonly understood, but memorial stones intended to preserve the name of the clan for all eternity. They were therefore placed conspicuously in the landscape. Runestones represent our oldest surviving original documents in Swedish language.
The stone is located outside the entrance of Sigtuna Museum on Stora gatan, “Gillög and Kuse (?) erected this stone after. Arne's son.” Runestone Gillög och Kuse was discovered in 1850 embedded in a cellar near St. Lars church ruin. Gillög and Arne were common names during the Viking era. The second name, Kusi, is originally a byname with the same meaning as the first part of the word ’kuslig’ (i.e. something big and scary).
