A Peek into Barcelona's Hidden Wartime Refuge - The Bateries antiaèries i

The Bateries antiaèries i barraques del Carmel, situated atop Turó de la Rovira in Barcelona's Horta-Guinardó district, offer a 360-degree panoramic view. Originally built in 1937 as an anti-aircraft battery to protect Barcelona from Italian airforce attacks during the Spanish Civil War, these bunkers were abandoned after the conflict. In the 1940s and 1950s, a makeshift settlement, Els Canons, grew around the bunkers, providing homes for some 600 displaced individuals.

This settlement persisted until 1990, when it was demolished to pave the way for the 1992 Olympic Games. Today, the Bateries antiaèries i barraques del Carmel have become a tourist attraction, but overcrowding and local resident concerns are escalating issues. The Museum of the History of Barcelona opened a space in March 2011 to communicate the history and significance of these bunkers, featuring informational panels and guided tours.
