Zumeltzegi Dorrea's tower square

Zumeltzegi Dorrea, found in Larraña auzoa 35, Oñati, is a prime example of Basque manorial architecture. Dating back to 1489, this castle has stood the test of time for over six centuries, making it one of the oldest standing manor houses in the region. Although some parts of the castle were destroyed in the 17th century, it was significantly restored in the 1980s. A notable feature of the castle is its main tower – an approximately 1.80-meter-high square structure that was renovated in the 1980s.

The tower and its original design hark back to the Middle Ages. Visitors can also see the castle's keep and its views, both square, and approximately 1.80 meters high, vestiges from the same medieval period. The main gate, a mark of the castle's 18th-century renovation, sits at the center of the keep. Despite the destruction it suffered in the 17th century, Zumeltzegi Dorrea continues to be a visible testament to the power and wealth that once thrived within its walls.
