Castle of Guevara-Gebara: A Medieval Fortress in Spain's Basque Country

Located in the municipality of Barrundia in the Basque Country of Spain, the Castle of Guevara-Gebara stands on the summit of Monte Guevara. This strategic position allowed the castle to control vital routes between the Llanada Alavesa and the Kingdom of France. The castle's history dates back to the 15th century, as Íñigo Vélez de Guevara had it built in 1481, the same year the Catholic Monarchs granted him the title of Count of Oñate

The ruins of the castle include four strategic gunports, remnants of the walls, and the impressive western tower. It served as a crucial point in the Wars of Bands as the Guevara lineage belonged to the Gamboino faction. Although it is unclear when the castle was first built, it is widely accepted that it was destroyed during the Carlist Wars in 1839.
