Sweden's first gymnasium

Rudbeckianska gymnasiet was Sweden's first grammar school.  It was founded by Bishop Johannes Rudbeckius in 1623 and now bears his name. Rudbeckius drew his inspiration from Germany and Bremen's school regulations, where students called djäknar were taught theology, physics, mathematics, Greek, Latin, logic, politics, and Hebrew. The school's primary task was the training of priests.

Of the three original buildings in which teaching was conducted, one remains today. In 1855, a new main building was constructed, which is Sweden's oldest functioning grammar school building.
