The Cycling Workers' Odyssey: Aseaströmmen in Västerås

Aseaströmmen is a sculpture on Stora Torget in Västerås, Sweden, created by Bengt-Göran Broström between 1985 and 1989. Eight bronzed cyclists are depicted on a polished 12-meter-long granite base, with a strömstare (stream observer) at the end who watches the cyclists. It's common to decorate the cyclists with accessories like neck scarves. Originally, the statue was planned to be a 25-meter-long wall with 13 cyclists, but the city council decided that the monument would be a 12-meter-long sculpture. The statue symbolizes the large number of cyclists who commuted to and from Västerås’s industrial giant ABB (formerly Asea) during shift changes. The company used the current in the Svartån river to generate electricity for the factory.
