Upton House, built in about 1695 for banker Sir Rushout Cullen, was expanded and donated to the National Trust by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted in 1948. Kitty Lloyd Jones worked on the gardens, particularly the bog garden, which today forms a National Collection of Aster. Upton House is known for its art collection, which includes works by Pieter Brueghel the Younger, George Stubbs, and Pieter Jansz. Saenredam.
